A wedge-tailed eagle soars on the hot currents rising over Glassriver Canyon, silhouetted against the unforgiving sun. A figure crouches on the switchbacks on the shaded side, looking out over the cracked red earth at the base of the canyon. Her people have guarded this place for thousands of years, since before the heat came, when a glacier carved this path through the rock and then melted into the distant sea.
The eagle swoops down to land on her outstretched forearm, grabs eagerly at the strip of meat she holds between her fingers. She strokes its breast feathers, head cocked as if listening. A line appears, etched between her eyebrows, a seam in her otherwise flawless, pale green skin.
The eagle ruffles its feathers and looks out into the canyon. In the distance she can see a plume of fire smoke rising from just beyond the ridge. The bird takes flight as she stands, bow in hand, ready to defend her home…
